Mahendra Singh Dhoni is an Indian cricketer who captained the national team across all formats from 2007 to 2017, winning the World Twenty20 in 2007, the World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013.

He is the only captain to have won all three ICC trophies, and he led Chennai Super Kings to multiple Indian Premier League titles. He retired from international cricket in 2020.

Arunima Sinha was a national-level volleyball player who lost a leg after being pushed from a moving train in 2011. Two years later she climbed Mount Everest on a prosthetic leg.

She became the world’s first female amputee to reach the summit and has since climbed the highest peaks of every continent. She runs a sports academy for disabled athletes in Uttar Pradesh.

Neeraj Chopra is an Indian javelin thrower who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 with a throw of 87.58 metres.

It was India’s first Olympic gold in athletics, and he has since added World Championship and Diamond League titles to his name. He continues to compete at the top of the sport.

Major Dhyan Chand was an Indian field hockey player who dominated the sport from the 1920s to the 1940s and won three Olympic gold medals, in 1928, 1932 and 1936.

Renowned for extraordinary ball control, he scored hundreds of goals for India and for the army teams he played for. India marks National Sports Day on his birthday, 29 August.

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is an Indian badminton player who won silver at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and bronze at Tokyo in 2020, the first Indian woman with two Olympic medals.

She took gold at the World Championships in 2019 along with multiple titles on the international circuit. She received the Padma Bhushan in 2022.
